Precious metal jewellery

In Germanic burials during the period of Roman influence, i.e. the beginning of our era, elaborate pieces made of precious metals (gold, silver) produced in local workshops are often discovered. These include clasps, pendants, necklace pins or openwork beads.

They were made using complicated goldsmithing techniques such as filigree (a decorative technique using thin wires measuring as little as 0.2 mm in diameter), granulation (using tiny metal beads of varying size from 0.5 mm in diameter) or soldering decorative thin silver or gold leaf onto the surface.

The precious metals used to produce such unique pieces probably came from melted silver and gold Roman coins that were looted during the Marcomanic Wars with the Roman Empire in 2 A.D.
