The cup presented here probably belonged to an unidentified guild of shearmen from Gdańsk. The first mentions of the Gdańsk Shearmen's guild, initially classified as a weaving craft, can be found in the mid-14th century. As there was only a small number of shearmen, they were part of the Gdańsk Tailors’ guild for a long time. It was not until the 16th century that their status as a separate guild related to the production of cloth was recognised. Shearmen dealt with the processing of cloth in its final stage, they used shears to trim the surface of the cloth and remove any excess nap.
