The numismatic study

Listen to the text of the page

Numismatics is a field that deals not only with the classification and description of coins but also medals, banknotes, bills or bank tickets, also known as substitute money. The collections of the Museum in Lębork cover a wide spectrum of issues related to numismatics. Enthusiasts will find here both the oldest coins that come from the times of the Roman Empire, as well as those that until recently were in common use. Undoubtedly, one of the most interesting numismatic artefacts is the so-called "Treasure of Lębork", which consists of a large number of "Bad szelągs (schillings)". Its historical value is invaluable. On the basis of such finds, it is possible to examine the city's trade contacts or the wealth of its inhabitants in the Middle Ages.
