Our Lady of Swarzewo / Ethnography

Our Lady of Swarzewo is the Queen of the Polish Sea. This title is due to both the geographic location of the Swarzewo sanctuary and the type of work the majority of the worshipers of Our Lady of Swarzewo did. For centuries, fishermen and sailors would pray to Our Lady of Swarzewo. The sanctuary first began as a chapel that was built over the well as a votive offering.

It was later replaced by a small church and then in the 1880s, a much larger church was built at the site. The carefully observed traditions have an extensive maritime theme. Boats and barges are particularly well-maintained providing transport routes across the Bay of Gdańsk for pilgrims.
