Waffle Maker / Ethnography

Kashubia has its own very special version of waffles. They are served all year round as an addition to coffee.

Traditionally, waffles were baked in special molds, the dough was quite similar in consistency to pancake dough. The main difference between Kashubian waffles and ordinary waffles is their shape – Kashubian waffles are rosette-shaped - five interconnected hearts.

The waffle maker had to be heated up to the right temperature. The inside of the mold was greased with a piece of fresh bacon or goose oil, and then the dough was poured over the entire surface. Some of the waffle makers also had the recipe cast on the outside.

Kashubian waffles feature on the list of traditional regional products for the Pomeranian Voivodeship as “Gdańsk waffles”.
